|Part 4: A Hollow|
Nothing much happens in this chapter.. <spoiler /><spoiler>
it's just explaining what happens when Shiki wakes up from her coma from her perspective... then she meets Toko who tells her about how she had accessed the "Root" and gained these mystic eyes that can see the death of all things... Also it seems Shiki thinks her murderous alter ego had killed himself at this time... but I'm a bit confused about that because the alter ego comes out again after this.
Part 5: Paradox Spiral
A different protaganist in this chapter... some guy who has to deal with the consequences of having stupid parents... his dad got in trouble with the law and his mom ran away from her rich family. this guy has been having dreams every night about his mom murdering his dad and then coming into his room and stabbing him to death. Finally one day he couldn't take it anymore and preemptively murdered both his parents.. then he met Shiki and started hiding out at her place to avoid getting into trouble.. but it seems the murders have gone unnoticed. The guy then falls in love with Shiki... I'm about half way through this chapter so far.
Then it goes to Kokuto's viewpoint.. he's at Toko's office with his sister Azaka (who is also a mage apparently), and they talk about how mages and sorcerers differ, and about the need for secrecy and stuff like that... then Azaka brings up the question of whether Shiki is really a boy or girl deep down.. Shiki thinks it doesn't matter. Kokuto wants to believe she's a girl... Then Toko tells Kokuto about how Shiki got her dual personality thing from her family lineage...
"Yin and yang, light and darkness, right and wrong, man and woman. The original reference is to Chinese cosmology of there once being one, but from the one comes two. In anmyodo, the Japanese practice of divination, this essential divide is known as ryogi, the pair of extremes."
The Ryogi dynasty developed a way of hiding their supernatural abilities behind a 2nd personality...
Next part is kind of confusing at first, and takes a while until I figure out what is going on... Shiki and Kokuto and Toko are investigating this apartment building. It seems abandoned.. but then they figure out there's a trick with the elevator and all the labels have been switched around to confuse people on which apartment they belong in...
Later Shiki is with that guy Tomoe again, the one who killed his parents, and he's taking her to that building where he lives, to where his parents corpses are supposedly at... they go in the apartment without ringing the doorbell, and the parents are both there and don't notice or acknowledge them at all. Shiki explains that because they didn't ring the doorbell before entering like he usually does, they are programmed to pretend they don't have guests... then they wait in his room for a bit, and a duplicate of Tomoe comes in and goes to his room... then Tomoe's recurring dream plays out and the mom comes in and stabs the fake Tomoe to death...
Then they go to the other side of the building, where the walls and everything are identical, and they go into Tomoe's real apartment where they find his dead parents... then some corpses come alive and attack them, Shiki takes care of them and then says to run away, but before they can escape, the big boss of this whole operation, Soren Alaya, shows up to introduce himself... Alaya somehow knows all about Shiki as well as the other supernatural murderers she has been killing up until now... Shiki tries to fight him but can't see any lines on his body.. he uses some spells to easily make Shiki immobile and comes close to killing her, but Shiki barely manages to strain her eyes enough to see a line in Alaya's protective ward, and breaks free and destroys it, then starts seeing more lines on him and gets confident in taking him out...
But even after all that, Alaya just won't go down... He explains that he has discovered his own "origin" which makes him unkillable... He is doing this experiment with the building, where its inhabitants are dead on one side and alive in a cycle of dying every other night on the opposite side.. this is supposed to help him figure out if he can change other people's origin enough to change how they are destined to die... that's all I was able to get out of this anyway. Alaya can kill Shiki there but for some reason just injures her and keeps her alive.
