|Luke returned to Phoenix's side after he used his powers to get the parrot to testify... Then the alchemist's butler, Jean Greyerl became our main suspect. She used a portal through the wall to throw her scepter into the room where Layton was turned to gold, so that the blame would be placed on someone else.|
Then Phoenix discovered that one of the gems on that scepter was a fake, and that brought up a connection between this case and the one from 3 months ago. Eventually, we got Jean to confess that she was the witch behind the murder of the alchemist. She saw him writing a letter to the storyteller about revealing the truth... and she fell to a moment of evil and killed him through the portal in the wall... However, she also claimed that it was another witch who appeared in the study and turned Layton to gold. Because this witch had the same gold spell as her, she used that opportunity to throw her scepter into the room in order to clear her own name.
Then it was found that an empty bottle of poison was stolen from the crime scene of Belduke's murder.. and that Belduke drank that poison himself and committed suicide. Jean had only thought that she was the one who killed him, but he was already dead by the time she strangled him through the portal.
This is going all over the place... Jean has the letter with her, and reads it for the first time. The letter wasn't about exposing Jean herself... it was talking about the witch that is connected to the bell tower that showed up... Barnham asks for Jean to be declared guilty in place of Maya, despite the fact that Jean has no reason to lie about this case after confessing to the previous case. Phoenix tries to tell them that since Jean didn't murder anyone, she shouldn't be punished...
"Whether the witch committed a crime or not is completely irrelevant. This is the witches' court. All witches must be punished by fire!"
Espella gets pissed off at this... "A town like this should never have existed! This shall be the last of the witch trials."
She confesses that she is the Great Witch Bezella, and asks to be burned so that Jean can be set free.
"I have lived hidden in the dark pages of my father's story, deceiving all of you. Many lives have been sacrificed because of me. But that shall end today."
Espella takes Maya's place... but then Maya jumps in at the last minute and tries to save her.. She saves Espella, but gets herself locked in the cage as it lowers into the flames.
Chapter 5 - The Taste of Despair
Phoenix, Luke, and Espella are devastated at what happened... Barnham shows up and admits he is at fault for allowing that to happen to Maya. He tells them of a hiding place in the forest where the other knights won't find them. They go to Rouge's Tavern... meanwhile Barnham is investigating Darklaw and the storyteller... why would the storyteller make his own daughter into a witch? Also it seems Darklaw is secretly working against the storyteller...
