|Episode 24 - The Final Messenger / The Beginning and the End, or "Knockin' on Heaven's Door"|
We first see the young Asuka finding her mother has hanged herself and then Asuka recently finding out about Kaji's death from Shinji. Asuka considers herself worthless because she can no longer pilot an Eva. Nerv Intelligence Agents find her in a bathtub in a ruined house, apparently after slitting her wrists in a suicide attempt. Misato learns that she's been found, and comments to herself that the timing between finding Asuka and Nerv finding the Fifth Child to replace her is too perfect.
There's a scene showing Gendo confronting Ritsuko about having destroyed the dummy system, in a pitch black room where you can only see them and a big red Nerv logo. Ritsuko really has taken after her mom in the most literal sense... She also brings up that her cat died while in her grandma's care. Gendo is surprisingly calm given that his backups of his loli waifu have all been destroyed.
A despondent Shinji stands at the edge of the crater lake by sunset, too afraid to go home or face Misato or Ayanami and realizing his friends from school are gone. His attention is drawn by a boy humming the Ode to Joy. Shinji is drawn to Kaworu on their very first conversation.
Singing is great. Singing enriches the soul. It's the crowning achievement of the civilization that the Lilim created.
Don't you feel the same? Shinji Ikari?
After Kowaru and Shinji introduce themselves, then it cuts to a scene where Misato and another Nerv guy are talking about this Fifth Child, and the guy whispers to her that he knows where Ritsuko is being held.
Misato is suspicious of Kaworu, and Kaworu's awesome synchronization scores befuddle everyone. He soon makes contact with Rei, attempting to give her clues as to her true nature.
Rei Ayanami... You're the same as me. So, both of us ended up in the same form as the Lilim while we inhabit this planet.
Rei is just like "Who are you?"
Meanwhile, Misato is spying on a conversation between Gendo and Fuyutsuki, and even they're suspicious of Kowaru and are putting all of the Magi's resources into figuring out who this kid is.
Misato goes into Shinji's room and sees that he's still not home, realizing she's failed as a guardian. Shinji is still sitting at the entrance to Nerv HQ. Kowaru then takes a late shower with Shinji, expressing his empathy for him.
You go to such extremes to avoid first contact. Are you afraid of connecting with other people? Then he starts to get even closer to Shinji as the lights go out in the bathroom.
If you don't get close to others, you'll never be betrayed and you'll never hurt each other. But you'll also never be able to forget your loneliness. Humans can never banish their loneliness for good, because being human means being alone. But humans are able to go on with their lives because they're able to forget it every so often.
Humans constantly feel pain in their hearts. Because the heart is so sensitive to pain, humans also feel that to live is to suffer.
You're so delicate, like glass, especially your heart.
Yes, you have my regard for it.
It means, I love you.
Rei is in her room thinking about how she somehow feels that Kowaru is the same as her... Meanwhile, Seele meet to discuss Gendo's betrayal of their trust. The next scene is Gendo discussing his goals with Unit 1's soul, and it is revealed that Adam's embryo has been grafted into his hand. (and now we have the reason that Gendo always has his hands in such careful positions). It's also revealed that the Lance of Longilus was the last thing standing in his way to fulfill the plan that he and Yui came up with.
Shinji talks to Kowaru about his past and his feelings about his father, so coming even closer to Kaworu. At the end of that scene, Kowaru says "Maybe I was born, so that I would meet you." Early in the morning the next day, Kaworu stands on the statue of an Angel, in the center of the crater lake. He talks to himself at first, speaking about how humans are not Gods, before fifteen Seele monoliths appear and speak of Gendo's agenda. In an apparent reference to an earlier conversation, they remind him that they have entrusted him with their wish, and tell him that he is the vessel of Adam's soul and that Adam's body is with Gendo.
Humans cannot create anything out of nothingness. Humans cannot accomplish anything without holding onto something. After all, humans are not gods. But there is one man who is trying to obtain power equal to that of God. There is a man, who is not one of us, attempting to open Pandora's Box once again. There is a man trying to close the Box before the Hope at the bottom appears.
Hope? You're saying that is the Lilim's hope?
Hope exists in as many forms as there are people. And that is because hope only exists in the hearts of people. However, our hope is becoming substantiated.
That is Lilith, the progenitor of mankind who are the false successors from the black moon.
And Adam, the progenitor of the Angels who are the true successors from the lost white moon. His salvaged soul exists only within you. However, his resurrected body already exists within Ikari.
Shinji's father... So, he is also the same as me.
That is why we entrust you with our wish.
I know. That's why I'm here now after all.
I knew this guy was talking way too unnaturally, like he's been studying how humans behave and is specifically extremely informed about Rei and Shinji's personalities to the point of being creepy... That's because he's the final Angel, and is making use of the data that all the previous Angels up until now have collected in order to worm his way up to where Gendo is. What I totally wasn't expecting though was that Seele was apparently working with the Angels all along, and that the Angels possessed Adam's soul.
Seele has never actually physically been there with Gendo. They're always just confronting him telepathically through sound monolith things. They want to do something about him, but can't, he's just too powerful and confronting him through sound monoliths like this is all they can do. This 17th Angel is their last hope. It's the black moon humans/Lilim vs the white moon angels/Adam.
Misato watches Kaworu from a distance, but only sees him speaking to himself. Confused, she is even more surprised when he apparently notices her at such a great distance. Meanwhile, Hyuga steals Kaworu's synch data on Misato's behest, and his ability to set his synch rate to any level deepens the mystery. Misato pays a visit to an incarcerated Ritsuko, who thinks Kaworu might be the final messenger.
Clearly, this episode is using "messenger" in place of the world "angel" to try and confuse the audience.
Ritsuko's suspicions are soon proved to be true. Kaworu activates Eva-02 externally, and he and his controlled Eva head down to Terminal Dogma.
Both Gendo/Fuyutsuki and the Seele monoliths are talking about how this is their final confrontation.
I never imagined Seele would send one directly to us.
The old men intend to step up the schedule by forcing our hand.
Humans forget their foolishness and repeat their mistakes. If humans do not redeem themselves willingly, they will not change. We will not rely on the powers of Adam or the Angels.
Our only choice is to make changes with our own hands for the future. I will be praying that Unit 01 will accomplish its task.
Shinji is ordered to sortie in Eva-01.
Stop it from invading Terminal Dogma at all costs.
Oh yeah, so at this point the viewer might still think that monstrosity with the Seele face on it that's in Terminal Dogma (and had the Lance of Longilus pierced into its chest until recently) is Adam's body, and might not have clued in that the real Adam's body is grafted to Gendo's hand... The thing in Terminal Dogma is Lillith, which is part of what Rei is born from I think.
It's a bit strange that Seele said that they want Eva-01 to accomplish its task. Shouldn't they have said Eva-02, since that's what they're in control of at the moment? I think they're still hiding something...
Shinji finds the idea of Kaworu being an Angel unacceptable, and he considers Kaworu as having betrayed the love and faith he placed in him. Newfound friends meet each other as enemies on the way down, and Shinji battles Eva-02 while shouting for Kaworu to stop. Kaworu continues, and tells him the truth about the A.T. Field along the way.
An AT Field!
That's right. That's what you Lilim call it. The sacred domain where none may trespass. The light of the soul.
Lilim, you know, don't you? That the AT Field is the wall that everyone has in their heart?
Wow the insane lore dumps have just been non-stop through this whole episode... So I'm guessing that the Lance of Longilus is the only thing that can pierce through even the strongest of AT Fields, and it was probably also acting as a barrier so that the body of the original Lilith in Terminal Dogma couldn't be possessed by the soul of Adam and cause the Third Impact. I guess Gendo wants his perfect copy of Adam (Eva-01) to fuse with Lilith while Seele/the angels want to do something else with it...
As Eva-01 and Eva-02 plunge closer towards Terminal Dogma, Misato whispers to Hyuga confirming that he's ready to self-destruct the whole place in order to prevent the two Evas from setting off the Third Impact. Misato is more worried about Eva-01 in its berserk form than anything.
There's also something important about the location of Terminal Dogma itself... I'm not sure what it is though.
Approaching Terminal Dogma, Kaworu sets up an A.T. Field barrier of unprecedented power to block out Nerv's view. Despite Shinji's best efforts, Kaworu enters the LCL Plant.
The final safety has been released! Heaven's Door is opening!
So, an Angel has finally reached it.
Hyuga prepares to self-destruct the facility. However, a second A.T. Field, generated by Rei, shows up before vanishing. She watches Kaworu as he approaches the crucified giant. After initially referring to the giant as Adam, Kaworu realizes his mistake, and identifies it as Lilith. He has a brief moment of realization before Eva-01 throws Eva-02 through the door and grabs him. Kaworu asks Shinji to grant him his final wish-to kill him, or let humanity die.
Thank you, Shinji. I wanted you to stop Unit 02. Otherwise, I may have gone on living with her.
Because it's my destiny to continue to live, even if it may result in the destruction of humanity. But I can also die here. Life and death are of equal value to me.
Dying of your own will. That is the one and only absolute freedom there is.
What? Kaworu, I don't understand what you're saying! Kaworu...
My last will and testament. Now, erase me from this world. If you don't, you will be the ones who are erased.
Only one life form will be chosen to survive the time of destruction and be given a future. And you are not a being who should die.
He looks up at Rei, and then Shinji, and says
Your people need the future. Thank you. I'm glad I met you.
Grudgingly, after a long hesitation with angelic music playing in the background, Shinji kills him. Misato tries to convince him he did the right thing, but he remains haunted by his action.[/i]
This was the BEST episode to watch while high, holy shit...
and that next episode preview at the end was even more awesome than the previous one.
