|Episode 18 - Selection of Life / Ambivalence|
The episode begins with the transport aircraft carrying Eva-03 flying through a formation of cumulonimbus clouds. A brief but massive spark of electricity is shown as the Eva enters the clouds.
Before Misato leaves for Nerv's second test facility at Matsushiro, Shinji questions her to confirm what he learned from Kensuke the other day. Misato still doesn't tell him who the new pilot is. Then, Kensuke suddely shows up and tries to volunteer to be Eva-03's pilot.
Then it cuts to a scene where Misato and Ritsuko are on a train. Misato talks about how she's nervous about telling Shinji about the new pilot, and Ritsuko says the new pilot seemed apprehensive and most likely won't tell Shinji about it himself. She mentions that Toji's only condition was to have his sister transferred to a Nerv HQ hospital.
Asuka shows up to class looking really pissed and taking it out on Shinji and his friends, while Kensuke is moping about how Misato rejected his offer to become a pilot. Later, Shinji wonders where Toji has gone during lunch, and Kensuke adds "He's been acting odd lately, hasn't he?"
Then it cuts to Rei approaching Toji up on the roof.
Oh, Ayanami, if you're lookin' for Shinji, he ain't here.
You know 'bout me, don't you? Seems Sohryu knows too. So Shinji's the only one who doesn't know.
You don't usually care 'bout people.
Really? I'm not sure I understand.
The one you care about's Shinji.
You may be right.
Hikari, having brought lunch for Toji, notices that Rei is hanging out with Toji on the roof. Later, Hikari is walking home from school with Asuka, and she tells her about her suspicion that Rei likes Toji.
Don't worry, Hikari. There's no way. She's a million times denser than Shinji is about relating to people!Asuka is perplexed about how Hikari could see anything to like about Toji.
Back at home, Shinji wonders out loud about who Eva-03's pilot could be, and Asuka pretends not to know. Asuka is in such a bad mood that she can't even enjoy having Kaji around (who is filling in for Misato).
Shinji asks Kaji about his dad while they're going to sleep.
What's my father like?
Well, that came out of nowhere. I thought you'd ask about Katsuragi.
Because it seems like you're always with my father.
It's the Vice Commander who's always with him. Have you been asking around about your father?
Because I haven't been around him much.
So you don't really know him?
But I've learned a lot about him lately. About his work, about my mother, so...
You're wrong there. You only believe that you've learned. People can't understand others completely. Who knows if you can even understand yourself?
Understanding each other one hundred percent is impossible. Of course, that's why we spend so much time trying to understand ourselves and others. That's what makes life so interesting.
Is that also true for you and Miss Misato?
The word we use for "she" literally means "the woman far away". To us, women will always be on the distant shore. Basically, there's a river dividing men and women, deeper and wider than the ocean.
I don't understand adults.
wow... Koji is another character that seems really basic on the surface but he actually has some really deep introspective thoughts.
The next day, the Eva-03 activation has started, with Ritsuko commenting that Misato doesn't seem very enthusiastic... The new pilot is there, but we don't see Toji in this scene at all. Meanwhile at school, Hikari is disappointed that Toji is absent again and shares her lunch with Asuka instead. Kensuke tells Shinji that he suspects Toji is the new pilot. Dumbass Shinji is like "no way."
It's interesting to note that almost all of the content during the first half of this episode was skipped/glossed over in the evageeks wiki synopsis. Instead the first 10 minutes are summarized by:
Misato leaves for Nerv's second test facility at Matsushiro. Shinji is confused to find Toji absent from school. Kensuke speculates that Toji might be the expected new pilot. Both Toji and Misato are waiting due to a delay in transporting the Eva to Japan. The delayed flight arrives, and the Eva is readied for activation.
The second half of this episode is where shit starts to happen. The Eva-03 activation test fails, and when they try to shut it down, a high energy reaction is detected inside the Eva. The 13th Angel, Bardiel reveals itself and the Angel-infected Eva roars as it sets off a huge explosion (possibly via its S² Engine).
So I guess by this point, the Angels have gotten smart enough that they can stop Nerv from activating any new Eva units. This is probably the same thing that happened with Eva-04.
Nerv headquarters is alerted about the explosion at Matsushiro. Subsequently, an entity with Blood Type Orange is detected, which is discovered to be the infected Eva-03. Attempts to eject the entry plug are inhibited by the Angel's biomass holding it back. Eva-03 is designated the Thirteenth Angel and the three remaining Evangelions sortie against the infected Eva, with no choice but to fight it with the pilot held hostage.
Since Misato is unavailable, Gendo is the one taking command of the three Eva pilots now.
Shinji remains ignorant of the fact that Toji is the pilot of Eva-03. Asuka is about to tell him when she is surprised and incapacitated by the infected Eva. Rei hesitates to shoot long enough for Eva-03 to detect Eva-00's presence and attack it. After pinning Eva-00 to the ground, it secretes a grayish-purple fluid that begins to infect Eva-00 through the left arm, which is severed with Rei still synchronized. Eva-03 goes on to fight Eva-01.
Shinji sees the trapped entry plug and refuses to fight the Eva while the pilot is still inside. The Eva's mutated arms reach out and grab Eva-01 by the neck. Gendo orders Shinji to fight, but Shinji would rather be strangled to death than kill Eva-03's pilot. As a result, Gendo orders the Dummy System to be activated. Eva-01 grabs the infected Eva-03's neck and soon breaks it, leaving the infected Eva limp. Eva-01 proceeds to smash in the infected Eva's skull and brutally dismember it. Shinji screams for his father to stop it and makes futile attempts to control the Eva himself, but Eva-01 continues until it crushes the Entry Plug.
Misato is found among the other survivors of the explosion at Matsushiro. Kaji explains that Ritsuko is safe and that Eva-03 was destroyed by Eva-01. A sobbing, miserable Shinji speaks to Misato on the radio briefly before the pilot of Eva-03 is revealed to be still alive. Shinji sees that it is Toji and screams.
There was also a scene a bit earlier when we thought Toji had died, showing Hikari happily cooking and wondering if Toji will eat with her this time... I wasn't expecting him to have survived after that, it really felt like they were going for the emotional build-up here... Although Shinji is still very emotionally distraught after having learned of Toji being injured.
