|Episode 16 - Sickness Unto Death, And... / Splitting of the Beast|
Early in this episode, the three pilots undergo a synch test, in which Shinji emerges the best synchronized pilot, a fact that greatly annoys and disturbs Asuka and causes her to leave, fuming.
Later on, a bizarre shadow emerges from the street in the city, seemingly out of nowhere. An alert is declared at Nerv and personnel observe as a sphere with Zebra-like black and white stripes floats over the city.
Eva-01 fires ineffectually at Leliel
Confused about whether or not this peculiar apparition is an Angel, the three Evangelions are dispatched to draw it out of the city airspace before engaging it. Asuka's goading prompts Shinji to take point position, closest to the target. An overconfident Shinji attacks the sphere without waiting for the other two Evas to get into position, and the sphere simply disappears. The target is confirmed to be an Angel, and to everyone's horror, a dark shadow materializes under Eva-01 and sucks it in.
That idiot. What's the point of doing well only on practice exams?!
So Shinji got too cocky and ran ahead to fight the Angel without waiting for his backup, and when he tried to shoot at it, it teleported above him, and the shadow beneath the sphere sucked Shinji into it. Then the same thing happened to Asuka. But because she knew to be more cautious by now, she managed to dodge and get out of its trap, even as the shadow sucked in all the buildings around her... Misato orders Asuka and Rei to retreat.
Then later after Asuka and Rei got out of their Evas, Asuka continues badmouthing him, and approaches her.
What? Is my bad-mouthing of Shinji that much of a problem for you?!
Do you pilot Eva just for the praise of others?
No! Not of others! I do it because I want to be able to praise myself!
Misato:Cut it out, you two! That's right, he went out on his own. So I'll just have to scold him when he comes back.
Ritsuko soon explains that the Angel is the shadow on the ground, not the floating sphere, and that it exists in another dimension in a form that can only be explained by higher mathematics. She estimates that Eva-01 has a maximum of sixteen hours of battery power for its life-support system, and concocts a plan that involves dropping all 992 N2 mines in existence to destroy the Angel and recover Eva-01, even at the risk of killing the pilot.
Misato gets in a fight with Ritsuko over this. Now that Kaji has shown him some shit proving that Gendo and the other higher ups at Nerv are hiding stuff from her, she's started questioning her on why Nerv considers Eva-01 so important.
Meanwhile, Shinji goes through a depressing introspective journey inside the Eva, when another entity- (The Angel Leliel) speaks about the shallowness of his own existence with him. In the end, Shinji sees an apparition of his mother.
Outside, both Evangelions are in position and a huge swarm of aircraft prepares for the mine drop, and the plan is just about to go into action when the shadow on the ground shakes and rips apart as though hit by an earthquake, and the sphere turns black and solid. To everyone's utter horror, Eva-01 tears out of the sphere and bellows in a horrible parody of birth, killing the Angel. Shinji is recovered from the Angel, and wakes up in the hospital with Rei at his side, where she had spent the night with him.
I think this marks just the 2nd time that Shinji has lost control of Eva-01 and he's gone into full berserk mode. The first time was way back in episode 2. Shinji had some really deep thoughts in the middle and end of this episode, I just screenshot'd most of it instead of copying it down in text.
This episode's iteration of the ending theme has some weird dialog going on at the beginning of it, and only a short bit of singing, in a younger girl's voice.
I noticed this episode isn't remastered like the other ones are, I'm not sure why.
