|Episode 13 - The Challengers|
A journey from which you can never return. Treasures that you can never again acquire. Your very life, which once lost will never be restored. Nearly all things in this world will never go back to the way they once were. Despite that, people still continue. Spurred on by the thought of viewing a landscape they've never seen before, they keep on walking... A longing for the unknown, you see, is something not a single soul is capable of stopping.
Nanachi seemed really impressed when she saw Regu's incinerator attack earlier, and correctly guesses that it's what caused him to pass out... Nanachi has a memory flashback from before she turned into a furry rabbit thing... Maybe this will explain why she's so uncomfortable whenever Regu comes too close to her?
This episode is 47 minutes long so I don't doubt there will be a lot more crazy twists revealed here... but there's still a lot of stuff left for a 2nd season to touch on.
The White Whistle Bondrewed and his team of cave raiders took a bunch of orphan children down with them to the Sea of Corpses to help with opening a path to the netherworld. Wow yeah he's a lot less caring than Ozen for sure.
Nanachi is a smelly homeless girl, who has eaten garbage her whole life instead of stealing food like the other homeless kids, and she was still afraid of people coming close to her back then because of her smell... Then MItty came and made friends with her.
Nanachi dispenses some lore from her book.
When a life is lost in the abyss, a soul is said to return to the bottom of this planet, and then the soul changes form and departs on a journey to someone who has wished for life...
This very pit, the bottom of which is unknown, replaces God. Well, I suppose it's just kind of a source of comfort that cave raiders rely on.
All the kids are kept locked up in a little room until one of them gets called on to head out to join the cave raiders, and the room keeps emptying out and eventually Mitty gets called on, leaving Nanachi all alone. Nanachi sneaks out and then overhears someone arguing with Bondrewed about how they're treating these kids like disposable lab rats to test out whether it is possible to keep your humanity while ascending from the 6th layer.
Bondrewed sent both Mitty and Nanachi down in separate tubes and tested out a system where Mitty receives the effects on the curse two-fold while Nanachi should remain human as long as Mitty survives the whole ascent... it worked, and it also made Mitty unable to die and trapped in this eternal hellish deformed body, with the only toll on Nanachi's body being that she turned into a rabbit person. Eventually, Nanachi took Mitty and ran away with her so that the cave raiders would stop experimenting on her and making her pain gradually worse each time.
That when she starts living out in a cabin, and hunting cave raiders to try and find one that is strong enough to put Mitty out of her misery, and to I guess experiment on them to try and make a medicine that can save Mitty... Now she's mostly given up on the latter and just wants to find someone who can kill Mitty. This is why she was so intrigued by Regu's incinerator attack. She explains that this weapon must be made from the same relic that Bondrewed used to make one of Mitty's eyes permanently disappear.
Oh yeah, there's that field of flowers where Nanachi bury the cave raiders that she captured and made use of... That place reminded Regu of something. Maybe we're also going to get more of Regu's backstory in this episode. Regu has to take some time to think about whether or not to kill Mitty. He thinks maybe taking care of Mitty is the only thing that allows Nanachi to keep her humanity. and after Mitty is gone she'll truly have nothing left.
Regu tries doing the cooking instead, using what he knows from watching Riko, but he doesn't know what he's doing at all and his food tastes/smells even worse than Nanachi's.
Nanachi never presses Regu about her request again after that 1 time, and then Regu goes to talk to her about it and he is finally convinced that killing Mitty is the best thing for her, and he makes Nanachi promise that she'll still take care of herself even after she's done taking care of Mitty and Riko.
man... the 30 minute mark has some amazing feels... from Nanachi's final farewell scene with Mitty to the point when Regu wakes up and sees Riko conscious again and helping Nanachi with the cooking... so good.
Nanachi doesn't mind Riko petting her furry body, but she says Regu does it in a lewd way that's she doesn't like when he gets close to her.
Riko reveals that she had the feeling there was another person here before while she was unconscious... and tells them about her dream where she made... eye contact with Mitty... and she couldn't understand what was happening except that she was in a lot of pain.
I couldn't speak, but with my eyes alone kept telling her, "It'll be alright, It'll be alright..."
Then I smelled something like smoke, and the crying stopped.
Riko asks Nanachi to come with them on their journey... then some relaxing chill music as the credits are shown and the 3 main characters are getting all the preparations ready to go to the 5th layer. I think they also sent a message up on a small hot air balloon, and Marulk found it at the seeker camp and Ozen's group reworked it and helped it resume flying to the surface.
The episode ends showing a room filled with lava lamps, and Bondrewed notices one of the lamps has burnt out, and he congratulates Nanachi on having found a way to kill Mitty.
That seems like the perfect place to end the season on. It didn't feel rushed at all. It brought a close to everything that went wrong in the 4th layer chapter and established a 3rd main character and a new villain as they set off towards the 5th layer.
