|Episode 2 - Resurrection Festival|
Riko studied the robot boy's body very, very intimately, and determined that he's an extremely special relic that's more valuable than anything her mom had found. They realize that if the higher ups discover Reg, they'll keep him as a science experiment or something... and Riko thinks she can just hide him in her room the whole time, but then they come up with a better idea and disguise Reg as a normal human and have him join the orphanage.
Over the next couple months, as the group prepares for their next cave expedition, Reg becomes accustomed to living at the orphanage. Meanwhile, we learn that there's all kinds of crazy powers that the special relics brought up from the abyss contain.
Riko goes to see the group of explorers that just got back from a long trip, and one of them, Habo, brought up a white whistle belonging to Lyza, Riko's mom. Habo gives the whistle to Riko for safekeeping. Riko asks if there's a letter from her mom...
Meanwhile, the Resurrection Festival is going on. Lyza is considered to be a legend among the white whistles and has some big historical program dedicated to her. Apparently these abyss dives can go on for years and years, and seeing a white whistle return from it is like a huge event. There's no telling whether they will even return or not.
Riko has hardly ever gotten to see her mom, and can barely remember anything about her. The Leader tells her she was just 2 years old when Lyza last entered the abyss, 10 years ago. He was Lyza's pupil, and knew her as a dumb alcoholic who didn't have her life together.
Riko learns just now that the reason she needs glasses is because of the effects of the Curse of the Abyss. Lyza brought her down to the 4th level when she was pregnant, and Riko was born down there after her father, a black whistle died. Lyza abandoned her mission in order to bring Riko safely back up to the surface in a very heavy curse-repelling relic, as there's no way Riko would've survived the trip back without that.
Jeez there's so much exposition in this episode, it's hard to keep up...
It turns out Riko's mom did have a letter for her. Riko (and Reg) get taken to a secret chamber in a castle, containing some drawings of creatures and relics that she's never heard of before. There's also a drawing of another robot kid... and a message saying "At the netherworld's bottom... I'll be waiting."
