|Episode 5: Turnabout Revolution - Trial part 1 recap|
This trial has much lower stakes than usual, especially for this game where every other trial had the main character's life or career on the line... This one is just a civil case though... if Apollo loses, the worst that happens is Dhurke is back to square one for trying to find the Founder's Orb... it's not like he intentionally stole it knowing it was the Atishon's heirloom, like he has proof showing that he thought it was a legal transaction.
Athena shows up at the last minute to help Apollo with the trial... she says she went to the wrong airport yesterday and that's why she never picked Phoenix up... Obviously she has no idea what's going on, and when she finds out Phoenix is our opponent, she wants to switch sides.
Ema is the first witness to come in... she says that the police have been tracking a notorious thief in Kurain Village who's stolen a bunch of artifacts, but they were never able to get enough evidence to search Dr. Buff's home... and now that Dr. Buff has died they found a whole bunch of stolen artifacts in his house... including a statue and a vase belonging to the Fey family... I knew I recognized those items from one of the earlier games... Phoenix says he recognizes the vase for sure and confirms that it definitely belongs to the Feys.
Apparently, Dr. Buff was a very considerate thief... he only borrowed the items he stole so that he could study them, and would go out of his way to return them to their rightful place after...
I'm already having trouble at this first part... got the game over scene where the judge declared Paul Atishon as the rightful owner of the orb/crystal, and the defiant dragons failed at their revolution...
This was actually really tricky... the new information you get from Ema shows that Paul's full name is Paul Atishon-Wimperson... and in Dr. Buff's email he is talking to someone with the initials "PAW"...
Phoenix is like "How are you so certain that PAW refers to my client's initials? Maybe the email's recipient was a dog-lover"
but Apollo gets Paul's birthday and links it to the numbers on the email address to show that it's even more likely that it's him... Phoenix agrees that it was Paul who asked for the item to be studied, but still says that item is in fact Paul's heirloom, not the orb.
Then he gets Paul Atishon to talk about what he knows about the Crystal of Ami Fey... he talks about his family's history and how the crystal was created by the originator of the Fey channeling technique, and given to Paul's grandpa as thanks for protecting the spirit mediums from discrimination. He keeps going off topic and talking about his own self worth...
Athena is like "He's totally ignoring your questions. It's like you're a moderator at a political debate."
Apollo points out the Khura'in mitamah symbol that's on the orb, showing that it couldn't have been made by Ami Fey in Japan... but Phoenix says it could've easily been made by Ami Fey since she had studied in Khura'in before, and probably knew the mitamah symbol from there.
A stalemate... Apollo is all out of options.. then suddenly Phoenix brings up another theory. He says he had Ema investigate Dr. Buff's death, and there was an out of place psychology book stained with coffee among all the archeology books that fell down... Phoenix thinks the defiant dragons threatened Dr. Buff to get the orb from him and then killed him and made it look like an accident by knocking the archeology books over
Apollo does the thing that the prosecutor usually does against Phoenix in this situation... "Even if the cause of death was murder, what makes you think it was the Defiant Dragons? You should know better than to hurl baseless accusations"
Phoenix: "Objection! Did you forget who you were up against, Mr. Justice?"
lmao I love this case
Paul Atishon says he saw Datz Are'bal leaving Buff's house the night Buff died.. the bailiff stops Datz from escaping... suddenly this has turned into a murder trial with Datz as the accused...
Apollo catches Paul with a contradiction, but then Phoenix convinces Paul to admit he was the one who anonymously reported the incident to the police, so that went nowhere.
this just keeps getting better... once again Apollo does the thing that prosecutors always do against Phoenix... "A-and what sort of evidence do you have? Can you actually prove that it was Mr. Are'bal who killed the doctor?"
Phoenix says he has yet another witness who saw Datz that night... I bet it's gonna be Sarge Buff.
The judge gives us a recess so Apollo can talk to Datz.. according to him, Buff was still alive when he left.
Yep, Sarge buff takes the witness stand next... er, his drone that is...
I had some trouble finding the contradiction at first, because the wording made it sound like he had turned off his drone completely and only heard the argument from his room, but it turns out you were supposed to present the drone as evidence to show that Sarge actually could see the crime scene the whole time... that was kind of unfair.
lol, the drone has these cartoony reactions where he gets blown up by missiles and stuff...
Next, Athena suggests using her powers to get Sarge to testify about what he saw... Sarge is like "UWAAAH! First evidence, now analytical psychology?! Where are these WMDs coming from?!"
Sarge goes crazy during this therapy session, and starts rampaging violently.. he even steals Athena's device and the judge's gavel... Athena manages to get it back and then pinpoints the source of his inner turmoil is that he saw fire when he went downstairs to see what was happening... He saw his dad standing over the orb, which was in flames... and he saw an image of his mom within the flaming orb before passing out... wow, Dr. Buff must've been getting into some spirit channeling stuff just before he died.
Found out that Sarge's fear of fire (which is what killed his mom) is what made him so reclusive. He stays in his room in order to avoid going anywhere near fire...
After that, Apollo presents evidence showing that Sarge didn't actually pass out right before his dad's murder happened, because Dr. Buff went and hid the orb in the cave that night. He had to have gotten murdered AFTER he came back from hiding the orb... even then, Sarge still blames himself for his dad's death. Athena says it's not too late to fulfill his dad's wish, and start coming out of hiding... She manages to get through to him, and the real Sarge appears out of nowhere...
Sarge Buff is actually a 12 year old girl in a wheelchair, named Armie Buff...
Armie says that she just realized it wasn't her mother she saw in the burning orb, it was the Holy Mother of Khura'inism... Phoenix is shocked to hear this, he knows exactly what this implies... Apollo and Athena aren't quite as up to speed, but Apollo figures out by looking at Buff's research notes, that he had managed to solve the riddle of the Founder's Orb by setting it on fire.
Armie suggests setting the orb on fire again, in order to prove that her dad really did manage to solve it... Phoenix tries to object, but Apollo says that Buff still has legal ownership of the orb until they've proven otherwise...
Judge: "Well Mr. Justice, I never thought I'd say this, but you may burn the evidence."
oh man.. the reveal of the Holy Mother inside the Founder's Orb, face and all... this scene was amazing...
Phoenix is completely stumped now... he can't think of anything to object to... the judge is about to hand down his verdict.
but then Paul Atishon intervenes... "That crystal is mine! I'll lose the election if I don't have it... Phoenix, you haven't forgotten our little talk, have you?"
oh man... some treachery is afoot
Phoenix starts trying to bluff an argument.. then he actually comes up with something.. he says that if this is really the Founder's Orb, then why hasn't the Holy Mother blessed Apollo with great spiritual power for solving the orb's riddle?
Everyone looks at him like he's crazy... the Judge is like "you've lost your marbles", and then he orders a 20 minute recess...
wow man... the twists in this one are really good... it looks like the case is almost over already, but then again I'm not sure, knowing this game and knowing that this is the final case, I wouldn't be surprised if there's about to be some big major turn that flips the entire case upside down and makes it take another day or two to be resolved.
