|Chapter 2 continued|
Klaus managed to find evidence of the mayor's shady actions, so now we're about to go try and apprehend him... The mayor tries to get Popo to defend him from the knights as they come to arrest the mayor.. We have a battle against Popo and a bunch of familiars in the town, and this introduces the doors and chests that can be collected during the battle... The fast characters, Alto and Rusty, are sent to get the treasure chests while the others go to fight Popo head on... and then part of the way through the battle, Ewan shows up and joins us. He has a bunch of abilities including a steal ability, and a heal power that costs money instead of SP... and he can unlock doors and chests faster than other characters. This battle is kind of interesting, cuz Popo keeps retreating and getting in the way of one of the chests. I have to lure her away cuz I'm determined to get all the chests even though I don't really have to.
got a bunch of new equipment from that.. mostly accessories.. thing is I don't know which stat buffs I should go for because there's not really any hints about what kind of attacks the next mission enemies will do... I dunno I guess I'll just wing it
Popo runs away, and Klaus says we should prioritize going after the mayor for now.. Ewan tells us where the mayor ran off to, the windmill... The mayor has been growing drugs in this windmill and forcing Popo to use her powers to help him. That's how the port town managed to become rich...
Then there's another "tune the girl" scene where you go inside Popo's witch realm and do a psuedo battle where the goal is to get Alto to where Popo is... Alto gets Popo to stop beating herself up over everything, and she joins the party and helps out in this battle against the mayor's mercenary henchmen.
This battle is pretty unique.. you can't walk through the drug plants so there's only a few narrow paths to take, and there's an upper outside path where the mercenaries are throwing bombs down from... I'm kinda liking the battle system in this more and more.. there's a lot of strategy involved, and I like how each character has their own unique traits. Popo can fly over stuff and move anywhere within horizontal range, and has a lot of far reaching attacks. she's most useful when you can get her onto higher ground... I find Rusty the most useful character by far, since he can move long distances, attack a couple spaces away, and even attack diagonally, and that's just his normal non-SP attacks. his SP attacks add even more versatility. Klaus is also very useful since his lance can attack multiple enemies 1-2 squares away, and he has a lot of strength and defense and has low level healing. Ewan is also quite useful because of his very long range shot attacks, and healing in exchange for money.. I haven't tried his stealing ability yet. The rest of the characters are average, maybe they'll get better skills over time.
The mayor called in more guards after and the battle went to a 2nd phase... but then something happened and the song stone that Klaus was holding went over to Alto, and Alto learned to conduct Popo's song, and it creates an effect on the whole field making enemies immobile... holy shit this conduct ability seems really broken, unless it can only be used in special situations or something.
The mayor gets arrested, and all the townspeople are confused and think that the wind witch is behind all this... The knights take Popo to the capital and you get a boring, badly voice acted scene with Popo experiencing the big city for the first time and being excited about everything... I just really dislike some of the voice acting in this game... Popo especially sounds very unnatural and forced whenever she is expressing emotion. Lisette and Popo are both hanging out with Alto in his room that night... Popo's thing is making bad tasting tea/coffee for Alto and Lisette's thing is making cake/cookies for Alto. Lisette gets Popo to try out some cake and... omg the cringe... Popo's reaction to trying cake for the first time is the worst voice acting I've heard in this this game so far. I should just mash A through it, I don't know why I didn't I just can't help but watch for some reason
