|Episode 3 - Departure|
Nat argues with Riko, trying to convince her not to go to the bottom of the Abyss because she'll never be able to return, and won't get to see her friends anymore.
Reg is going on his first expedition tomorrow... he's thinking about what he saw in Lyza's letters... It seems like Lyza probably met this robot kid already when she went down to the 7th layer, and he was tasked with going up to the top layer to check on/protect her daughter.
Reg keeps digging up these squishy things, and Nat says these are just low tier relics. Then he finds a human skeleton. Nat explains that there are a lot of skeletons of people that died in prayer around here, they're from like 2000 years ago.
Reg keeps wondering about his existence, and thinking he might find the answer if he goes to the bottom of the abyss... He sees Nat getting sick on the way back up, while he's completely unfazed.
That night, Riko tells everyone she's decided to sneak out and go to the bottom of the abyss starting tomorrow. Reg decides to go along with her and use his extending arm to help her climb down. One of her friends pulls out a map of the abyss to help them plan better.
Up to 1,350 meters down is called the Edge of the Abyss, where it's still pretty safe except for some creatures coming up from the 2nd layer occasionally.
The 2nd layer is called the Forest of Temptation. This far down is already considered so difficult that it's not worth saving any Red Whistles that go down that far. Then it turns into the Inverted Forest, where there's crazy air currents and savage beasts roaming the skies.
The 3rd layer is called the Great Fault, it's a vertical cliff at this point that goes down 4,000 meters.
The 4th layer at 7,000 meters down is called the Goblet of Giants. Only Black Whistles can go down this far.
The 5th layer is called the Sea of Corpses, the domain of White Whistles. You can count the number of people who have returned from this layer on your fingers.
The 6th layer is the point of no return.
The 7th layer... anyone who's gone down there can only send letters up through a balloon (which is what happened in the previous episode). It's possible that non-White Whistles have gone down that far, but any letters that are sent from them become disregarded and made into a mere rumor. The Curse of the Abyss can cause people to become crazy and tell lies, so only letters sent from White Whistles are taken seriously.
Nat gets mad when Riko still wants to go after hearing all of this, and says that her mom probably already died a long time ago. This only makes Riko want to go even more.
Reg and Riko are about to head out, with Shiggy tagging along... but Reg thinks it would be too sad for Riko to go out on her last journey without making up with Nat, so Reg sneaks around trying to look for him, but Nat wasn't in his room. Then he gets caught by Leader... Reg tries to explain Riko not being in her room because she has the runs... Leader is like "you're going to the bathroom too right?" and seems to be hinting that he knows what Riko is up to and wants Reg to take care of her.
Reg catches up with the others, and then Nat shows up to join them. Him and Riko made up and now Nat is trying to help her out as much as he can.
Nat tells Reg that even if they use mail balloons to try and contact the surface, it's not likely they'll arrive from where they're going. Riko theorizes that her mom probably sent a bunch of copies of her letters until one of them eventually made it back to the top. Nat agrees that this actually makes sense.
They go through a slums part of the town, Nat grew up here so he's leading the way. He explains that the people living here eventually get sick and die from the toxins of the abyss.
Riko and Reg have an emotional farewell moment... meanwhile Reg found something interesting, but has no time to talk about it after some residents caught them sneaking around.
Heading into the chasm for which even darkness is no match... For those who offer up their bodies and challenge it, the Abyss is said to provide all... Life and death, curses and blessings... All of it. At the end of their journeys, what will they come to finally choose? What will be determined by the will of the netherworld? Or will it be determined solely by those who challenge it?
After 3 episodes of buildup, it looks like shit is about to get real now.
