|Part 3: Lingering Pain|
This chapter had me hooked all the way through...
There's this girl, Fujino Asagami, who can't feel any sensations on her body. Her experience is like that of a ghost, just drifting through the world... but one day, as she's being raped and bullied by some delinquents, one of the guys takes it too far and messes up her spine, and that temporarily gives her back the feeling of pain... Fujino felt alive for the first time ever in that moment... at that point, she unlocks her latent powers (given to her by the Asakami dynasty), and starts murdering all of the guys through telekenesis... she then goes on a murdering spree, as seeing other people in pain is the only way she can relive that moment and remember what pain feels like.
Mikiya somehow gets strung into this mess and is forced to go and look for one of the guys that this murderer is after. He finds him, and tells him about Fujino and how much of a psycho witch she is... Mikiya then takes him to Toko's office for protection. Toko then hires Shiki to track down and kill Fujino, which Shiki gladly accepts because she too enjoys murder... Mikiya still thinks that they can reason with Fujino... Shiki disagrees and says she and her are a lot alike... Mikiya trusts Shiki too, and is hiding the fact that he almost committed suicide because of her, during the time she was in a coma...
The battle scene between Shiki and Fujino is intense... Fujino just goes nuts and uses her powers to destroy everything around her, to get Shiki to come out of hiding so she can use her powers on her... but finally Shiki learns to see the strings of Fujino's powers and is able to neutralize them.
Fujino and Shiki lock eyes. Fujino sees only a deep emptiness, and Shiki sees only fear.
"There's a flaw for everything in the world," says Shiki. "Air, intent, and even time. Humans need not even be said. If there's a beginning for everything, then there's also an end. My Eyes see that end, the death of everything. And once I see that death, all anything needs is a single, light push, that sends it barreling off into entropy. Magic, just like yours." With those sinister Eyes, Shiki glares at Fujino. "That's why, if there really was a God, he would fall just as easily against me."
Shiki ends up not being able to kill Fujino, because Fujino got her insensitivity to pain back, and killing her in that state would be unfun (also probably because Mikiya's sense of trust started getting to Shiki).. instead, Shiki uses her Eyes to destroy the disease that was killing Fujino (the real source of the pain that Fujino thought came from a stab wound), and Mikiya shows up just in time to get Fujino to a hospital...
