|The 2nd episode only served to introduce the "last rites" prosecutor and establish Ema as the new main detective. They've both travelled to Khura'in in order to appear in this 3rd episode, and it seems like Apollo, Athena, and Trucy won't be involved in the main plot at all. Instead, this episode is about Phoenix reuniting with Maya Fey. |
Also this 3rd case gives a lot more character development to the Khura'in princess Rayfa. The 1st case only introduced her and gave you a glimpse of her personality during the trial, but this case has her follow Phoenix around everywhere so you get to know her a lot better.
Episode 3: The Rite of Turnabout - Investigation part 1 recap
The intro scene teases something about some rebel prisoners escaping from Khura'in's prison, and then the masked "rebel hunter" shows up and kills them or something...
It's now been 2 weeks since the 1st case, and Phoenix is finally about to meet Maya, on the day that she has to perform the Purification Rite. She acts like a proper priestess when she first shows up to surprise him, and then she goes back to her old personality again, calling him "Nick" and everything.
"She's a spirit medium from Kurain Village back home."
oh.. that's what had me confused, this country of "Khura'in" is a different place than the Kurain Village from the earlier games. She's just here to train enough so she can become the master of her village.
this music makes me so happy...
Maya is actually filling in for someone else for this Purification Rite. The high priest's wife is pregnant, so now Maya is filling in as Lady Kee'ra, who is sort of this country's founder/savior.. also there have recently been sightings of someone dressed in Lady Kee'ra's robes, capturing members of the "Defiant Dragons" group...
Ahlbi tells Phoenix that he has to sit in a very uncomfortable prayer pose for two days while the rite is going on, but he passes out from pain after just a minute.. then he wakes up in the high priest's house with no explanation given yet.. and Ahlbi comes to tell him that Maya has been arrested for the murder of the high priest (named Tahrust Inmee). Phoenix goes back to the ritual area, and Ema Skye is there for some reason, directing the police to arrest Maya.
A whole day has past since Phoenix passed out from back pain. The murder took place in the inner sanctum, a sacred place where the spirit of Kee'ra resides in, during the Purification Rite, only the high priestess and the person playing Lady Kee'ra are allowed to enter it.
Ema says that she was ordered to come here by the international prosecuter, Sahdmadhi.. Phoenix convinces her to let him into the inner sanctum to investigate.
Phoenix meets Rayfa in the inner sanctum.. as the princess of Khura'in, of course she'd be allowed in here.. when Phoenix explains why he's here, she assumes he must want to temper with the evidence.. she's so untrusting of lawyers because of how her parents raised her, but she has no problem with him investigating here as long as she keeps an eye on him.
...Rayfa's personality is really growing on me. also her theme is really good.
Phoenix asks Rayfa ("Her Benevolence") what the inner sanctum is about, and she refuses to talk.. but then when Phoenix suggests it's because she doesn't know, she gets all flustered, trying to pretend she knows everything, and then gets one of her servants to come and whisper the answer to her.
"This spring is where Kee'ra came to cleanse her body of the blood of battle."
the victim's blood has made the water in the spring turn red.. and there's an old legend that says "The spring shall run red upon Lady Kee'ra's return."
some text on the wall says Lady Kee'ra placed all of her defeated foes into the prison at the top of this mountain, so that their souls won't turn into evil spirits..
more lore... Lady Kee'ra was the Holy Mother's younger sister. The Holy Mother and her descendants (including Rayfa) are not allowed to get their hands stained with blood, but I guess that doesn't apply to the sibling of the original Holy Mother.
Rayfa stays with Phoenix to monitor him even after he's done investigating the sanctum... she says she also doesn't know the identity of the vigilante rebel hunter that dresses as Lady Kee'ra..
Phoenix and Rayfa met some strange bearded man who doesn't remember who he is, back at the sanctum gate, and he took off before I could ask him anything.. then we went to the detention center to talk ot Maya... she says she got put to sleep during the rite somehow, and didn't see how the murder happened... thinks she might've done it while being possessed by a ghost. Rayfa accuses Maya of training only for prestige, and says someone like her could never be a master of the Kurain channeling technique.
Also, Maya says the spring was actually already blood red even before the high priest was killed.
Also, Maya presented a letter signed by Lady Kee'ra's insignia, saying "Do not perform the rite. I know what you are planning."
Rayfa was unaware of this.. and she refuses to believe that the rebel hunter posing as Lady Kee'ra is a suspect.
Phoenix finds Ahlbi in the Bazaar area.. and he tells Rayfa that he trusts Phoenix despite her telling him not to.. Rayfa gets sad, thinking that her failure in the previous case caused commoners to start trusting lawyers more.
Ahlbi gives some info about the escaped prisoner.. he's the 2nd in command of the rebel group, the Defiant Dragons. apparently the prison ontop of the mountain is where Khura'in keeps its prisoners still to this day, and that guy escaped from there somehow.. I guess that makes this escaped prisoner another suspect. This person is also the one who killed the previous queen.
Also, Ahlbi gives me something he found called the Warbaa'd Arrow. Rayfa immediately recognizes it as one of the weapons used by Lady Kee'ra.. and Phoenix remembers seeing something like this in the high priest's house.
Next, Phoenix goes to talk to the high priest's wife (named Beh'leeb Inmee).. and there's some more evidence to collect in this place. Bah'leeb keeps pretending to talk to her dead husband through his portrait, and sometimes puts the portrait over her head and pretends to channel his spirit and act like he is talking to you.
Beh'leeb has Psyche locks on her when you try to ask her about whether anyone held a grudge against her husband.. this is the first time in this game that you see Phoenix's special ability that comes from his magatama that he got from Maya a long time ago... it's way cooler than Apollo's nervous tick sensing ability which is really dumb and not fun at all... I kinda like Athena's emotion sensing ability where you have to find a contradiction between the statement and the person's emotions, but unlocking people's psyche locks is still the most interesting of the protagonist abilities cuz it quizzes you on various things about the story that you've learned up until now and makes it feel like you are really breaking through the lies to reach the truth.
That was pretty easy to figure out, but I didn't gain any new information from that. Beh'leeb doesn't seem to know why Kee'rah would've sent that warning to him.. she only wanted to keep it a secret so that he wouldn't be suspected of being a rebel.
Suddenly, Rayfa gets told that her mother, Queen Ga'ran, is holding a rite of passing for the high priest, and Phoenix is forced to come along... his attempts at trying to talk properly to the queen are pretty funny.
The queen is actually very nice to Phoenix, despite knowing that he's a lawyer... then Justice Minister Inga shows up, that guy that Phoenix met at the end of the first case.. he is revealed to be Rayfa's father... wow, I guess that's where Rayfa's hatred of lawyers comes from.
Maya explains the reason she's trying to keep her spirit channeling power a secret is because spirit channeling is supposed to only be possible for members of the Khura'in royal family.. but somehow this power made its way to the village of Kurain.. Phoenix theorizes that Maya must be a distant relative of Rayfa.
Lastly, Maya shows off the collectable toy she recieved in exchange for her Steel Samurai watch. Khura'in has its own version of the Steel Samurai called the "Plumed Punisher"... no idea how this will be relevant to the case, or if it's just an item that you can present to Maya after the case is over for a cheery feel-good moment.
