|At first this game is very easy and boring... It's just breakout, but with kirby powers, and sometimes there's multiple horizontal and vertical paddles that you control, and often (at least in the early game) there's a lot of safety nets to prevent you from dying. |
but then it introduces you to new mechanics and new abilities with every new stage. The 2nd stage teaches you the super bounce, where you have to press A just as you touch the ball to make kirby bounce fast and break blocks that he can't break otherwise. The 3rd stage introduces the shock power. The 3rd stage is the first time I died, and the first time I failed to super-clear a bonus chance thing (where it turns all the breakable blocks into items that kirby can just go right through and collect)... and the first time I failed to beat the top score for the stage, just barely.
Also, there are 4 bonus games that you get access to whenever you find a hidden warp star in a stage. All of them use the same basic breakout mechanics, but in different ways.
Each stage is made up of several rounds that you have to clear all the blocks in... Except the 2nd last round the goal is to beat an enemy that takes several hits, and then a warp star to the boss will appear, and you'll go to the stage boss if you hit it, regardless if you've cleared all the blocks or not. The boss stage always has no blocks, and just the boss in the middle and spikes on all sides, with safety net blocks that break to reveal spikes. The 3rd stage boss is the first time where the boss's attacks destroy some of the safety nets if you don't block them. Also if the boss's attack hits one of your paddles, it temporarily shrinks.
Then stage 4... that's where the difficulty really picks up, and I could see lives becoming an issue now. Although I'm pretty sure the game saves between levels, and a game over only means you have to start the stage over again.
I barely beat stage 4 on my last life, but didn't even get onto the ranking board.
Got my first game over at the boss of stage 6. Now this is officially hard. Beating the target score in every level is gonna be even harder.
