|This game... I was SO close to actually beating it legitimately without save states. Most of the game had pretty fair difficulty. Getting a game over only meant having to restart the level you're on from the beginning, and most levels only took me 1 game over before I had memorized it enough to beat it. The bosses only take a few tries and are pretty easy once you learn their pattern.|
I liked all the different kick attacks you could unlock by leveling up. You level up by grabbing the random EXP drops that sometimes appear after you kill enemies. Each enemy defeated gives 3 random pickups that fly up and then fall down through the screen so you can only grab 2 of them at most. These drops are either crystals that only give useless points, magic bottles, hearts, or items that give you EXP which is the most important thing. You need the EXP you can get in order to learn the stronger attacks and magic abilities.
Everything was going great. I thought I'd finally manage to beat this game after all these years... but then I got to the last level.
At the first section, there are these ball enemies that spawn right ON you when you scroll up and there's almost nothing you can do to avoid getting hit... the first miniboss does a lot of damage to me, and always seems to get a few hits in on me no matter how careful I am. but fortunately, this level is generous enough with hearts and magic that I'm still doing okay... the next section is fairly easy.. the 2nd miniboss is easy with the walkthrough's tips...
But then... the next vertical scrolling section of the last level, it's constantly raining bubbles. and mages are all over the place shooting at you. at least with the mages, you can block their attacks with the barrier spell, but the bubbles are unblockable, completely random, and are constantly causing me to fall off and die. I don't have enough magic to just fly over most of the areas. I'm also sometimes dying due to accidentally executing the midair over+B flying kick attack that sends me into a pit, but that's technically my fault. These bubbles that just come down at random very quickly and without warning are the worst kind of unfair difficulty.
If it weren't for those bubbles, this'd be a pretty good game. I legit tried to get passed this a bunch of times, got like 4 or 5 gameovers here, before finally getting so annoyed that I had to quit... I don't even want to try and save-scum my way through this. If a game is too annoying to be able to beat without save states, then I have no interest in beating it. This is one of those instances where the game's absurd difficulty made me genuinely not care about beating it anymore.
